Mk. 1:21 Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.
Lk. 4:31 Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching on the Sabbath.
Mk. 1:22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Lk. 4:32 And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.
The debate that is now beginning to occur in the Jewish world is, “By what authority is Yeshua doing the things that He is doing and teaching the thins that He is teaching?” It is clear that Yeshua is teaching in a new manner that is different than the Pharisees are teaching, and He is teaching by independent authority. The scribes and Pharisees always taught by citing previous teachers as their authority. Yeshua uses His own authority.
Mk. 1:23 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out.
Lk. 4:33 Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried with a loud voice.
It is also clear that the demons do recognize the authority of Yeshua. Just from this, the people know that there is something going on that they have not seen before. Demons may make poor character witnesses, but they are witnesses to things in the spirit world. From this, people have an inkling that Yeshua is no ordinary man. They may not understand everything that is going on, but they know it is something out of the ordinary.
Mk. 1:24 Saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Yeshua of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are – the Holy One of God.”
Lk. 4:34 Saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Yeshua of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us? I know who You, who You are – the Holy One of God.”
Mk. 1:25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him.”
Lk. 4:35a But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him.”
Mk. 1:26 And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.
Lk. 4:35b And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him.
Mk. 1:27 Then they were amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”
Lk. 4:36 So they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word is this? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”
When the demon makes its presence known in the synagogue service, Yeshua casts it out, and that creates even more questions among the people. The verse in Matthew adds this question: “What new doctrine is this?” Yeshua does not use the standard Pharisaic formula for casting out demons, but simply commands it to come out. The people are already amazed at His teaching without using teaching from previous sages and authorities as is normally done. Yeshua is demonstrating that He is His own authority and proves it by casting out the demon His own way.
Mk. 1:28 And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.
Lk. 4:37 And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
